Group classes can be wonderful for the shared experience of moving and breathing together, and for moving into stillness and silence together. However, not every body is always served best in group classes. There are times in our practice, and in our lives when we need more individualized attention and instruction. Perhaps an injury is limiting your physical practice, perhaps aging has changed your physical and emotional landscape, perhaps anxiety or other mental health issues require support, care, and attention. Ideally individualized yoga for everybody would be universal so that each person is provided appropriate instruction and experience to be able to stay connected with their own particular physical, mental and emotional needs even within a group setting.
The vast scope of yoga can not always be conveyed in group classes. Yoga is so much more than stretching, or a purely physical 'work-out'. It's so much more than increasing or maintaining flexibility, strength or good posture! Those aspects are a valid and necessary part of yoga, but they are not an end in themselves. There is validity in exploring the physical 'asana' part of the practice as fully and deeply as desired, while understanding that the aim of traditional yoga is much richer and deeper.
Engaging in private yoga sessions with a yoga therapist gives you the opportunity to explore both more personally and more deeply what yoga has to offer ~ to the extend of your interest. Perhaps your goal is to receive instruction in a personally tailored asana practice and learn how to modify and adapt this practice appropriate to your particular needs. Perhaps you would like to address mental or emotional blocks, maybe you're fascinated by breathwork and what is can do for you, or the subtle anatomy aspects of yoga (the energy body and chakra system). If you're drawn to the spiritual aspects of yoga, yoga as a lifestyle, or yoga nidra for its support in awakening to our true nature, any and all of these explorations are possible and welcomed.
Yoga therapy looks at the whole person, with an aim to empower each toward their own healing and return to wholeness. Whether you are an advanced yoga practitioner, or brand new to the practice, the practice can be designed by a yoga therapist to suit your specific needs and aspirations.
Yoga therapy is a complimentary healing modality that can benefit those dealing with mental and emotional issues such as stress, depression, anxiety, trauma, PTSD, or physical injuries and limitations due to injury, under-use, illness, or aging. Yoga is so all encompassing that there is a practice that can be of benefit to all, whether a simple breathing or visualization practice to a full, well-rounded yoga program that includes an asana, breathwork and meditation practice.
Yoga & Healing

Yoga Therapy can help those completely new to yoga to those with a well established practice, and all those in between. As one of my teachers says, "If you can breathe, there is a practice that will be of benefit to you".
What happens in a Yoga Therapy session?
After an initial intake and information gathering, I will design a program specifically for you. It may include pranayama (breath work0, yoga postures, meditation or lifestyle and diet suggestions, depending on your goals or issues. We will go over this together in your session and you'll be given a "yoga plan" & homework to follow between sessions. In exchange for your practice, you will soon begin to notice improvements - physically, mentally & emotionally. A regular yoga practice, even if only 10 minutes a day will help you feel more centered, balanced, light and joyful!
If you'd like to include yoga therapy as part of your practice of self-care, please contact me to set up an appointment. Sessions can be held at my home studio, in your home, or at a public yoga studio, depending on your needs.
My rates are below, and you can contact me through the "Contact" link above.
I look forward to hearing from you!
**Please note that Yoga Therapy is a complimentary treatment system and is not meant to replace your primary health care provider.
